A cultural phenomenon this game has changed the perspective of people of playing games! Breaking numerous records and setting a benchmark in gaming world, Pokemon GO has started to create history by giving players a chance to have a mini adventure playing Pokemon. Here is an early review on it.
Pokemon GO is a free-to-play location-based reality mobile game developed by Niantic and published by The Pokemon Company as part of the Pokemon franchise. It was released worldwide in July 2016 for iOS and Android.
The game allows players to capture, battle and train virtual Pokemon which appear throughout the real world! Yes you heard it correct! Throughout the “REAL” world. It makes use of GPS and the camera of compatible devices.
The game received mixed critical reception. It was given good reviews by some medical professionals for potentially improving the mental and physical health of the players, but also had controversy due to the reports of accidents and being a public nuisance to some locations. It is one of the most downloaded smartphone app upon its release.
After logging into the app for the first time, the player creates their avatar. The player can choose style, hair, skin, and can choose from a limited number of outfits. After the avatar is created, it is displayed at the player’s current location along with the map of the player’s surrounding. The map includes a number of Pokestops and Pokemon gyms. These are mostly located at identifiable landmarks.
As players travel through the “REAL” world, the avatar moves along the game’s map. Different Pokemons are located in different areas; for example, Water-type Pokemons are located near water. When a player encounters a Pokemon, they may view it either in the reality mode or with the animation view of the game. AR mode uses the camera and gyroscope on the user’s mobile device to display an image of a Pokemon as thought it were in the real world.
Unlike other games in the Pokemon series, players in Pokemon GO do not battle wild Pokemon to capture them. The player may throw a Pokeball at it. If the Pokemon is caught, it will come under the ownership of the player. The success to catch the Pokemon requires right force, the right time and the type of Pokeball used. After capturing, the player is awarded currencies : candies and stardust. A player can use stardust and candies to raise a Pokemon’s Combat Power (CP). The player can also transfer the Pokemon back to the Professor to earn one more candy and create room for more Pokemon. The Ultimate goal of the game is to catch all the Pokemon species and evolving to obtain the original 151 Pokemon! All Pokemon are displayed with a combat power. Generally, as a player levels up they will catch Pokemon with a higher CP.
Players can earn experience points by various activities. At level five, the player is able to battle at a Pokemon Gym and can join three teams :
- Red Team : Team Valor, which uses Moltres as their mascot.
- Blue Team : Team Mystic, which uses Articuno as their mascot.
- Yellow Team : Team Instinct, which uses Zapdos as their mascot
Effects on Health : Some people have suggested that Pokemon GO improves the mental and physical health of the players suffering from depression and solid anxiety. Numerous players also reported increased motivation to exercise and improved moods. Crossing street into traffic or walking into the ocean are distinct possibilities, because you are constantly looking at your phone searching for a Pokemon. getting lost is a risk too.
Controversies : The game was criticized for using locations such as cemeteries and memorials as sites to catch the Pokemon. The game sparked complaints from the Dutch company, who said that the players had entered their railway tracks and fire stations to catch Pokemon.
Impact : Despite controversies, the game has also gained positive response as noted earlier about the fitness issue. Players gathered in national parks and in India players have reported finding Pokemon in Temples!
